The toolkit
Momentum Games uses a small set of tools so that the technology supports the session instead of competing with it. The primary platforms are Discord, D&D Beyond, and Foundry VTT. Some campaigns may use Owlbear Rodeo, Google Meet, or Roll20 when they are a better fit.
You do not need to master every feature before play. The goal is simply to join the right spaces, confirm that your equipment works, and know where to find your character.
Complete this setup before session zero whenever possible. If something does not work, ask early. Technical questions are welcome.
Discord
Discord is the main communication hub before and between sessions.
Before joining the table:
- Install the desktop application or confirm the browser version works.
- Join the campaign server using the invitation from your GM.
- Set your server display name to the name the group will recognize.
- Check the announcement, scheduling, and campaign discussion channels.
- Test your microphone in Discord’s voice settings.
Use campaign channels for scheduling questions, character discussions, and useful links. Keep important decisions visible to the whole group rather than burying them in private messages.
D&D Beyond
D&D Beyond is the usual home for character sheets and shared character options.
Your campaign invitation will provide the correct campaign link. Join that campaign before creating or importing your final character so the available content and table settings are applied correctly.
During play, keep your character sheet current. Update hit points, equipment, spell use, and major changes while they are fresh. If the sheet does not support a table ruling cleanly, add a clear note instead of trying to force the wrong automation.
Beyond20
Beyond20 is the browser extension that connects your D&D Beyond character sheet to Foundry VTT. It adds roll controls to abilities, attacks, spells, and other parts of the character sheet so results can be sent directly to the Foundry chat.
Install the extension for your browser:
After installation:
- Open the Foundry campaign in one browser tab.
- Open your D&D Beyond character sheet in another tab in the same browser.
- If you use Chrome, click the Beyond20 extension while the Foundry tab is active and grant it access to that page.
- Return to D&D Beyond and make a simple ability or attack roll.
- Confirm that the result appears in Foundry’s chat.
Chrome may require Beyond20 to be activated again when you reconnect to the Foundry game. If the roll remains inside D&D Beyond, check the extension on the Foundry tab before changing other settings.
Foundry VTT
Foundry VTT is the primary virtual tabletop. It may contain maps, tokens, handouts, journals, lighting, and interactive elements for the session.
Before the first game:
- Open the campaign link in a current Chromium-based browser.
- Allow the site to load fully before reporting a problem.
- Confirm that you can select and move your token.
- Check that dice rolls and your character sheet open correctly.
- Avoid unapproved extensions that alter the Foundry interface. Beyond20 is the expected exception for sending rolls from D&D Beyond.
Foundry can be visually rich, but the shared conversation remains the game. When in doubt, describe what your character is trying to do and let the tools follow the fiction.
Audio and connection
Clear audio matters more than an expensive setup.
- Use headphones whenever possible to prevent echo.
- Choose a quiet space and reduce avoidable background noise.
- Position the microphone close enough that you do not need to shout.
- Use push-to-talk if your room is consistently noisy.
- Close large downloads or streams before the session.
- Keep a charger nearby for any device used during play.
If your connection drops, rejoin when you can. The group can pause briefly or summarize what happened; there is no need to apologize for ordinary technical problems.
Final check
Before session zero, confirm that you can:
- Access the campaign Discord server.
- Hear and speak clearly in the voice channel.
- Open the correct D&D Beyond campaign.
- Use Beyond20 to send a test roll from D&D Beyond to Foundry.
- Sign in to the Foundry VTT game.
- Reach your GM if one of those steps fails.
The exact invitation links and any campaign passwords should remain in the private campaign channels rather than on this public wiki.
